[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Heo Young-in, chairman of SPC Group, bowed his head and said, "I pray for the repose of the deceased who lost their life in an unfortunate accident and offer my deepest condolences and apologies to the bereaved family," regarding the accident in which a worker in their 20s died at the SPL Pyeongtaek bakery factory, an affiliate of the group.
On the 17th, Chairman Heo stated in an apology letter, "I feel extremely devastated and saddened by the sacrifice of a precious life at the production site, and I sincerely apologize for causing concern to many people."
Chairman Heo emphasized, "The company is sincerely cooperating with the investigation by the relevant authorities and is doing its best to identify the cause of the accident and take follow-up measures. We will devote all our efforts to prevent recurrence through improvements in the working environment and facility investments so that such heartbreaking incidents never happen again."
Meanwhile, Chairman Heo visited the funeral site of the employee involved in the accident the evening before to pay his respects.
Earlier, at around 6:20 a.m. on the 15th, a female worker in her 20s, Ms. A, died after her body became caught in a sauce mixer machine at the SPL bakery factory, an SPC affiliate in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. There was one other employee at the scene besides Ms. A, but it is known that the employee was away from the spot at the time of the accident.
President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed regret the day before and instructed, "Investigate the exact circumstances of the accident and whether there were any structural problems." Minister of Employment and Labor Lee Jeong-sik and other labor officials also visited the accident site and the funeral site the day before.
The Ministry of Labor ordered a work stoppage after the accident on the 15th and is currently investigating whether the workplace violated the Serious Accidents Punishment Act and the Industrial Safety and Health Act.

The SPL workplace, an SPC affiliate where the accident occurred, is subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
