[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Park Hee-young) has partnered with Quy Nhon University, a national university in Vietnam, to establish Korean Studies major courses within the regular curriculum of the Department of Oriental Studies at Quy Nhon University.
This follows the signing of the 'Korean Language Education Cooperation Agreement' between Yongsan-gu and Quy Nhon University last April.
Quy Nhon University, located in Quy Nhon City, a sister city of Yongsan-gu in Vietnam, received approval from the Vietnamese government to open the courses and began recruiting students from August. The enrollment capacity is 30 students.
The classes will be held twice a week (2 hours per session) for 16 weeks until the end of January next year, featuring a diverse curriculum covering not only the Korean language but also Korean culture.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "Yongsan-gu's efforts to promote the Korean language and culture have borne fruit," adding, "We will continue to take the lead in spreading Korean culture through exchange and cooperation projects with overseas sister cities."
The district began exchanges with Quy Nhon City, a central Vietnamese port city, in 1996. In 2016, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the sister city relationship, the Yongsan International Exchange Office was established in Quy Nhon City as a communication channel between the two cities.
An official from the district said, "In April 2016, except for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, there were no educational institutions teaching Korean, so we opened a Korean language class," adding, "Although the capacity was 40 students, it was very popular with about 800 applicants."
Accordingly, in June of the same year, Yongsan-gu signed a 'Cooperative-type Sejong Institute Operation Agreement' with the Sejong Institute Foundation, becoming the first local government in the country to do so, and established the 'Quy Nhon Sejong Institute.' The Quy Nhon Sejong Institute operates within the Yongsan International Exchange Office, with enrollment reaching 2,238 students.
