The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) held a discussion on April 14 at the Crown Harbor Hotel in Busan regarding the development of guidelines for assessing the coastal environmental impact of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage opening.
Since April, KIOST has been conducting the "Development of Monitoring Guidelines for the Nakdong River Estuary" study to evaluate the impact of opening the Nakdong River Estuary and to manage these effects while promoting sustainable use.
The "Development of Monitoring Guidelines for the Nakdong River Estuary" study proposes core evaluation items, standard research methods, and management policy directions following the barrage opening.
More than 30 stakeholders from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ministry of Environment, Busan City, academia, NGOs, and fishing communities participated in the forum to share the results of the guideline development and exchange diverse opinions.
The forum featured presentations on the "Current Status of the Nakdong River Estuarine Brackish Water Ecosystem Restoration," "Impacts of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage Opening and Basic Directions for Ecosystem Restoration," and "Targets for Estuary Restoration Management and Management Policy Directions."
Subsequently, core evaluation items and standard research methods to assess the impact of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage opening on the surrounding coastal geomorphology and fisheries ecosystem were categorized into ▲water quality, geochemistry, topography, geology ▲benthic organisms, aquatic ecosystems, fish ▲numerical models, remote sensing ▲vegetation, birds, and the progress of guideline development was shared.
Academics, government officials, and NGO representatives also participated to discuss academic and practical measures for developing monitoring guidelines for the Nakdong River Estuary.
