At the '2nd International Forum on Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking (HyIS)' held by POSCO on the 12th (local time) at Fotografiska in Stockholm, Sweden, Chairman Choi said, "Common challenges faced by the international community, such as climate response, cannot be solved by anyone without solidarity and cooperation."
He added, "Since hydrogen reduction steelmaking itself is a very challenging goal, it cannot be achieved alone. If everyone present here unites their will and embarks on this path together, the carbon-neutral era will come sooner, and humanity will once again leap forward toward a better future."
The HyIS forum is a gathering of experts from the steel industry, raw material suppliers, engineering firms, academia, associations, and institutions to discuss carbon-neutral strategies and sustainable growth of the steel industry based on hydrogen reduction steelmaking. Last year, POSCO proposed cross-border cooperation and solidarity to accelerate the realization of carbon neutrality and held the world's first HyIS forum in Seoul.
This year's second HyIS forum was co-hosted following Chairman Choi's proposal in February during a meeting with Daniel Bolven, Swedish Ambassador to Korea, to jointly host the event with SSAB. POSCO and SSAB represent hydrogen reduction steelmaking technologies using the fluidized bed furnace and shaft methods, respectively. SSAB is a Swedish steel company established in 1978.
POSCO expects that the collaboration of these two companies, which possess the most competitive technologies in hydrogen reduction steelmaking, will lead the eco-friendly trend not only in Europe but also garner international community support and participation, accelerating the establishment of a practical cooperation foundation.
In particular, by directly showcasing POSCO's proprietary HyREX technology in Europe, they aim to widely promote its excellence in eco-friendliness and economic feasibility, seek cooperation with more companies, and strengthen global scalability.
The forum was further enriched by the participation of sponsoring organizations such as the Korean Academy of Engineering, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, and the Energy Transition Agency, which lead global low-carbon initiatives, providing a platform for more diverse and in-depth exchanges of opinions.
