The KJFM Award is given to the author of the most cited paper, and Professor Oh was honored for his research titled "Evidence of Potential Health Risks of Sedentary Lifestyle."
According to this study, Korean adults have an average sedentary time of 8.3 hours. Only 8.9% of adults had less than 4 hours of sedentary time, while 20.6% had 12 hours or more. Prolonged sedentary time was found to increase overall mortality and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and various cancers (breast cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian epithelial cancer).
To reduce the risks associated with prolonged sedentary time, it is important to reduce total sedentary time, but even with the same sedentary duration, interrupting it intermittently with physical activity can reduce health risks. Professor Oh said, "Reducing long sedentary time is most important," and added, "If prolonged sedentary time is unavoidable, interrupting continuous sedentary periods with appropriate physical activity can reduce health risks, as confirmed by various evidence."
