Japanese Automakers Withdraw from Russia One After Another... Nissan Follows Toyota and Mazda
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] As the war between Ukraine and Russia shows signs of prolonged conflict, Japanese automobile companies are successively withdrawing from Russia.
According to Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun on the 11th, following Toyota Motor and Mazda, Nissan Motor has also decided to end automobile production in Russia.
The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade also stated, "The Nissan Executive Committee has approved the plan to sell its assets in Russia to Russian entities," including "the factory and research facilities in Saint Petersburg and the marketing center in Moscow," AFP reported.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February this year, Nissan has faced difficulties in procuring parts for its Russian factory and has suspended production since March. Approximately 43,000 vehicles were produced at Nissan's Russian factory last year.
Toyota also announced on the 23rd of last month that there is no prospect of resuming production and has begun procedures to terminate production at its Saint Petersburg factory in Russia. Mazda is reportedly negotiating with local companies to end production at its Vladivostok factory in Russia. These factories have also been inactive since March or April.
