Recognized for Building Consensus on Marine and Island Conservation through Lifelong Learning
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] Jeonnam Yeosu City (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it won the Grand Prize at the Ministry of Education's '2022 19th Korea Lifelong Learning Awards.'
The Lifelong Learning Awards are given annually by the Ministry of Education to various sectors of society that have contributed to the practice of lifelong learning in daily life. Yeosu City received the special award twice in 2008 and 2019, and this year was honored with the Grand Prize.
The Grand Prize-winning program, "Lifelong Learning Going to the Sea," is a marine-related lifelong learning program operated since 2017 with the purpose of raising citizens' interest and consensus on the conservation of the sea and islands.
In particular, it was evaluated as an opportunity to dramatically change citizens' awareness of the sea and islands ahead of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo.
Specific programs include ▲Training of Ecotourism Guides ▲Island Village Art School ▲Island Ecology School ▲Coastal Academy ▲Coastal School ▲Snail Island Travel School ▲Island Learning School, operating 2 to 3 courses annually.
Especially, the Island Village Art School, operated from 2017 to 2020, created murals on seven islands including Durado with local young artists and residents.
The ecotourism guides trained in 2017 are still participating as instructors at the Island Learning School, and the Snail Island Travel School, Island Ecology School, and Island Learning School have greatly contributed to lowering the psychological accessibility to Yeosu City's 365 islands.
Na Byung-gon, Director of Tourism and Cultural Education at Yeosu City, said, "Since our city was designated as a lifelong learning city in 2006, we have been striving to develop lifelong learning programs with citizens. Thanks to many citizens who actively participated in lifelong learning, we were able to receive the Grand Prize," and added, "We will continue to operate various programs so that anyone can practice lifelong learning in daily life."
