Japan Allows Visa-Free Entry Starting Today... Domestic Travel Support Policies Also Implemented
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] NHK and other broadcasters reported that the Japanese government will resume visa-free (visa exemption) entry to Japan for 68 countries and regions, including South Korea, starting from the 11th.
According to the Japanese government's measures, Koreans will be able to stay in Japan for up to 90 days without a visa for purposes such as tourism, visiting relatives, study tours, inspections, and short-term business. This marks the resumption of visa-free entry for Koreans after about 2 years and 7 months.
According to reports, from this day, the Japanese government will abolish the daily entry cap (50,000 people) and remove the restriction that limited foreign travel to Japan to package tours only. However, travelers must submit proof of three COVID-19 vaccinations or a negative test result within 72 hours before departure when entering Japan.
Previously, the Japanese government suspended the visa exemption system for Koreans from March 9, 2020, and gradually expanded this measure worldwide. Nearly three years have passed since then, and as the COVID-19 situation has gradually subsided, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced last month that visa-free tourism for foreigners would be allowed.
The Japanese government will also implement the "National Travel Support" policy, which supports domestic travel for Japanese citizens, from this day until the end of next month. For package trips including transportation and accommodation, up to 8,000 yen (about 80,000 won) per person per night will be supported, and for accommodation-only reservations, up to 5,000 yen per person per night will be provided. Coupons usable at restaurants and other places at travel destinations will be given at 3,000 yen on weekdays and 1,000 yen on holidays.
