'Seoul Urban Agriculture International Conference' Held at DDP on 13-14... Theme: 'Urban Agriculture in the Era of Transition'
22 Experts from 5 Countries Including the US and Germany Share Roles and Cases of Urban Agriculture
Confirming Positive Functions of Urban Agriculture Such as Climate Crisis Response, Emotional Healing for Citizens, and Production of Healthy Food
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Urban agriculture experts from around the world are coming together to explore the future of urban agriculture in the era of transition and its role in addressing social issues such as climate change and loneliness.
On the 11th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will hold the "2022 Seoul Urban Agriculture International Conference," featuring urban agriculture experts from around the world, over two days from the 13th to the 14th at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). The "Seoul Urban Agriculture International Conference" is an annual event where domestic and international urban agriculture experts gather to share best practices by country and city and to promote cooperation and solidarity among urban farmers. This year marks the 11th edition of the conference.
The theme of this year's international conference is "Urban Agriculture in the Era of Transition." Twenty-two experts from five countries?Korea, the United States, Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands?will participate to share the roles and cases of urban agriculture applicable to large cities facing turmoil due to climate crises and social problems.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government stated that as responding to the climate crisis has emerged as a global challenge, eco-friendly urban agriculture that produces healthy food while reducing carbon emissions is gaining more attention. The purpose of this event is to share excellent cases from various countries and jointly derive applicable measures for the metropolitan city of Seoul.
The conference, held over two days from the 13th to the 14th, will open with a keynote speech titled "Urban Agriculture Opening the Future" by Kwon Young-geol, Chairman of the Seoul Design Foundation. On the 13th, the theme will be "Urban Agriculture and Food in the Era of Transition." Turner Wyatt, CEO of the Upcycle Food Association in the United States and one of the top 20 leaders in the food and agriculture sector, will begin with a presentation titled "Food and Food Upcycling in the Era of Climate Crisis."
On the 14th, under the theme "Green Healing, Healing Urban Agriculture," Pauline Nougebauer and Nicole Paldofski from the German Kneipp Association will present on the topic "Utilizing Agriculture for a Population with Strong Immunity," discussing changes in health concepts and natural healing therapies. Following them, Hans Pils, founder of the Dutch Social Green Project, will give a lecture titled "Healing People, Plants, and the Environment: Healing Agriculture in the City."

Han Young-hee, Seoul City’s Director of Labor, Fairness, and Coexistence Policy, said, "The Urban Agriculture International Conference is a place to address global social challenges from the perspective of urban agriculture and to share ways to provide citizens with healthy food, emotional healing, and various other benefits." She added, "We hope this becomes a platform for creating social value through urban agriculture."
