Dongbanwi-Korea Federation of SMEs Mediation
Ready-Mix Concrete Industry Agrees to Postpone Work Stoppage
Meeting Scheduled Until the 19th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Oh Young-gyo, Chairman of the Win-Win Growth Committee, stated on the 9th, "We will identify conflicts scattered throughout the industry and transform them into win-win cooperation through communication and trust."
On the same day, through mediation by the Win-Win Growth Committee and the Korea Federation of SMEs, the ready-mix concrete industry, which had declared a work stoppage starting tomorrow (the 10th) in protest of cement price increases, decided to postpone the 'shutdown' by 10 days.
Initially, the small and medium-sized ready-mix concrete industry had planned to halt operations if cement companies did not withdraw the cement price increase or delay it until March next year. However, after mediation by the Win-Win Growth Committee and the Korea Federation of SMEs, the cement and ready-mix concrete industries agreed to continue their win-win consultations and postpone the ready-mix concrete production stoppage until the 19th, a 10-day extension.
The Win-Win Growth Committee and the Korea Federation of SMEs plan to work on building mutual trust to prevent damage across the construction industry and to ensure that communication channels between industries are not cut off. In particular, they will hold meetings for win-win consultations between the two industries until the 19th to continue dialogue.
Chairman Oh said, "Due to recent raw material price increases, conflicts between upstream and downstream industries have expanded across various sectors," and evaluated, "This outcome marks the first step toward easing conflicts between the cement and ready-mix concrete industries."
He added, "The Win-Win Growth Committee will continue to identify conflicts scattered throughout the industry and transform them into win-win cooperation through communication and trust."
Kim Ki-moon, Chairman of the Korea Federation of SMEs, diagnosed, "The small and medium-sized ready-mix concrete industry is caught in a sandwich position between large cement companies and construction firms, facing fundamental structural problems in the industrial ecosystem where they cannot raise prices despite rising manufacturing costs."
