[2nd Report] North Korea Fires Two Short-Range Ballistic Missiles into the East Sea
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] North Korea has once again launched ballistic missiles into the East Sea. This comes two days after it fired what is presumed to be a Hwasong-12 type intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) eastward from the Mupeong-ri area in Jagang Province on the 4th.
On the 6th, the Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that they detected two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) launched from the Samsok area in Pyongyang toward the East Sea between approximately 6:01 a.m. and 6:23 a.m. North Korea has mainly used Sunan Airport when launching missiles from Pyongyang, making the Samsok area’s appearance as a missile launch site a first.
North Korea’s missile launches strongly reflect its opposition to the redeployment of the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan (CVN-76, 103,000 tons class) to waters around the Korean Peninsula. After completing joint exercises with South Korea, the Ronald Reagan left Korean waters but is scheduled to redeploy to international waters in the East Sea to participate in joint exercises involving South Korea, the U.S., and Japan as a countermeasure to North Korea’s intermediate-range ballistic missile launches.
Regarding this, North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a dawn press release that it is "closely monitoring the serious threat posed to the stability of the Korean Peninsula and surrounding areas by the U.S. bringing an aircraft carrier strike group back into the waters of the Korean Peninsula," according to a report by the Korean Central News Agency.
