Busan Film Festival Pays Tribute to Nouvelle Vague Master Late Jean-Luc Godard
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The 27th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) pays tribute to the late master director Jean-Luc Godard, a pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague and a filmmaker who created countless masterpieces over half a century.
Director Jean-Luc Godard, who passed away on September 13, directed over 120 works during his 60-year career. He led the Nouvelle Vague, a film movement that emerged in late 1950s France among young filmmakers, introducing a new paradigm to the film industry. He received acclaim for the film Le M?pris (1963), won the Silver Bear at the 10th Berlin International Film Festival for A bout de souffle (1960), the Golden Bear at the 15th Berlin International Film Festival for Alphaville (1965), and the Jury Prize at the 67th Cannes Film Festival for Goodbye to Language (2013).
In tribute to Jean-Luc Godard, a master class titled “Godard and the Nouvelle Vague by Serge Toubiana” will be held. Serge Toubiana is the chair of the New Currents jury at this year’s Busan International Film Festival, the author of over ten film books including Truffaut: The Eternal Portrait of a Cinephile, former editor-in-chief of Cahiers du Cin?ma, and former director of the Cin?math?que Fran?aise, as well as a French film critic.
Additionally, the documentary See You Friday, Robinson, featuring Jean-Luc Godard, will be screened. Directed by Mitra Farahani, the film captures the meeting and artistic exchange between Iranian literary figure Ebrahim Golestan and Godard. On September 9 and 10, director Mitra Farahani will also hold audience Q&A sessions (GV) for See You Friday, Robinson.

Meanwhile, this year’s BIFF will be held over ten days from October 5 to 14 at seven theaters including Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae-gu, CGV Centum City, and Lotte Cinema Centum City, across 30 screens.
