Mother Harasses Daughter by Visiting Her Residence... Fined for Stalking Charges
Living separately due to frequent verbal abuse
Accused of threatening by pounding on the door for over an hour
Left a letter saying "Dad has a woman"
Court: "Continuous and repetitive stalking behavior"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] A mother accused of continuously harassing her daughter by going to her residence, shouting, and knocking on the front door was sentenced to a fine. The court judged this as persistent and repetitive stalking behavior.
The Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 7 (Presiding Judge Jeong Cheolmin) sentenced Ms. A, who was indicted for violating the Act on the Punishment of Stalking Crimes and Trespassing, to a fine of 3 million won and ordered her to complete 40 hours of a stalking treatment program on the 15th.
According to the prosecution, Ms. B, the daughter of Ms. A, had been living separately due to her mother's verbal abuse and did not disclose her home address or contact information to Ms. A. However, Ms. A learned of Ms. B’s residence through her own sister and on December 8th last year at 10:55 p.m., followed a delivery person to Ms. B’s house.
Afterward, Ms. A is accused of pressing the doorbell, grabbing the door handle, entering the front door password, and shouting threats for 1 hour and 7 minutes, saying, “I know everything inside the house. Dad has a woman. Dad doesn’t give money. If you want to see your younger sibling’s urn, open the door.” A week later, on the 15th at 8:50 p.m., she approached again by knocking on the front door for 38 minutes, telling Ms. B to open the door, and slipped seven letters with messages implying “Dad has a woman” into the door gap.
Regarding this, Ms. A claimed, “I was worried about my daughter who had been out of contact for a long time,” and argued that “doing the same act twice at one-week intervals is not stalking and does not violate social norms.”
However, Presiding Judge Jeong stated, “From around January 7, 2019, until October last year, there were instances where Ms. A made abusive phone calls or sent texts to Ms. B,” and “Ms. A was aware that Ms. B did not want contact,” judging Ms. A’s actions as stalking.

He added, “Ms. A admits the facts themselves,” and cited the mother-daughter relationship between Ms. A and Ms. B as a reason for sentencing.
