Yoon "Addressing Concerns on Inflation Reduction Act"... Biden "Will Engage in Serious Discussions"
Two Meetings Including Global Fund Financial Pledge Conference and Reception... Discussions on 'IRA, Financial Stabilization, and Extended Deterrence'
[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] On the 21st (local time), President Yoon Suk-yeol met with U.S. President Joe Biden in New York, USA, and requested cooperation on the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). President Biden expressed his willingness to "engage in serious consultations," but due to many variables such as the U.S. political situation, it seems unlikely that substantial follow-up measures like legislative amendments will easily follow.
President Yoon and President Biden held two talks in New York on the same day, coinciding with the 7th Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund and a reception hosted by President Biden and the First Lady, discussing cooperation on the IRA, financial stabilization, and extended deterrence.
According to the Blue House, at this meeting, President Yoon explained the concerns of the Korean industry regarding the IRA to President Biden and requested cooperation between South Korea and the U.S. to alleviate these concerns. The two leaders also agreed to closely cooperate to implement liquidity facilities for financial stability if necessary.
They also addressed the North Korean issue. The Blue House stated, "The two leaders evaluated the ongoing consultations between South Korea and the U.S. regarding extended deterrence," and "agreed to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries to deter North Korean attacks and prepare joint responses to North Korean provocations."
The '7th Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund,' which President Yoon attended that day, was not originally scheduled. Initially, a South Korea-U.S. summit was planned, but due to President Biden's political schedule, the two leaders adjusted to a brief meeting. From the Blue House's perspective, consultations were held with the intention to proceed with the summit at all costs, and accordingly, President Yoon attended the conference and met with President Biden.
As the Global Fund replenishment conference extended, President Yoon canceled his attendance at the Korea-U.S. Startup Summit and the K-Brand Expo, which he had planned to attend. Originally, President Yoon was scheduled to attend economic-related events to encourage businesspeople from both countries and to achieve concrete outcomes such as establishing joint funds and attracting investments.

The South Korea-U.S. summit was disrupted because President Biden shortened his stay in New York due to domestic political schedules, including the High-Dollar Political Contributions Transparency Act. President Biden also did not deliver a keynote speech on the first day. It was reported that President Biden stayed in Washington rather than New York at that time.
