According to the New York Post on the 22nd, Eric Smith visited a pizza shop in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in June and ordered a pizza worth $13.25 (approximately 18,000 KRW), leaving a tip of $3,000 (approximately 4.18 million KRW).
At the time, he reportedly expressed that he had earned a lot of money through cryptocurrency and wanted to give back to society. The receipt caught attention as it was marked with "Tip for Jesus."
The employee who received the tip, Mariana, said, "During these difficult times of the pandemic, receiving help from a stranger was truly heartwarming. I will also leave generous tips for others."
The heartwarming story was shared widely on social media.
However, the story took a new turn after three months. Eric, who had left the tip, suddenly changed his mind and demanded the tip back. Eric said, "If you cannot return the money, sue me," adding, "The court will decide."
The restaurant stated that the money was properly paid to the employee and that they have already spent all the money, so they cannot return it.
The restaurant is currently preparing for legal action. They claimed, "We accepted Eric's action as a sincere gesture," and added, "We hope Eric takes responsibility for his actions and relinquishes his rights to the tip. If this was going to happen, he should not have left the tip in the first place."
Eric is currently out of contact.
