This project became a reality in the Jeonnam region thanks to Haenam-gun's proposal to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to host the National Marine Fisheries Museum and the support of National Assembly member Yoon Jae-gap urging construction at Ttangkkeut.
Currently, proposals are being accepted through a public contest within Jeonnam Province, and Haenam-gun is speeding up its attraction activities by emphasizing that it was the first local government to propose the project and is the optimal location for its implementation.
Haenam, located at the southernmost tip of the Korean Peninsula, is surrounded by the sea on three sides and has geographical conditions that allow access to both the continent and the ocean, playing an important role in Korea's maritime history.
Since prehistoric times, settlements have been formed centered around the sea, and during the Mahan period, it was a hub of active maritime trade as an international trading port connecting China and Japan, as well as the main activity area of Jang Bogo of the Silla Kingdom.
Furthermore, it is a transportation hub connecting Mokpo, Yeongam, Jindo, Wando, and Gangjin, offering excellent accessibility, and with the symbolism of "Ttangkkeut," it has established itself as a representative region of Korea's maritime culture.
Additionally, there are no similar exhibition facilities within Haenam-gun, highlighting the lack of opportunities to showcase the excellent maritime culture of Ttangkkeut Haenam.
Accordingly, the county strongly emphasizes that Haenam-gun is the optimal site for hosting the National Marine Fisheries Museum from the perspective of balanced regional development among local governments in the province.
Haenam-gun is also focusing on building public consensus on the feasibility of hosting the museum by promoting a county-wide signature campaign.
Following a residents' briefing session for Haenam's attraction, fisheries organizations and social groups have participated in the campaign by posting banners expressing their wishes for the museum's attraction and conducting a relay campaign, with all residents joining the effort to attract the National Marine Fisheries Museum.
Moreover, agreements are being made with related organizations, social groups, the Ttangkkeut Marine Natural History Museum, and local universities to support the museum's attraction, and the Haenam County Council formed a special committee for the National Marine Fisheries Museum attraction on the 20th to actively engage in the competition.
The National Marine Fisheries Museum will be a marine complex facility covering 42,500 square meters, including exhibition halls, experience centers, and research facilities. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to invest the entire project cost of 124.5 billion KRW from the national budget to build it in the Jeonnam area.
Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province will receive proposals from local governments by the 7th of next month, conduct proposal presentations and on-site evaluations on October 14-15, and select the final site on October 17.
