According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 21st, as of midnight, 41,286 new COVID-19 cases were added, bringing the total confirmed cases to 24,502,968. Domestic cases accounted for 40,960, and 326 were imported cases.
The number of new cases decreased by 52,674 compared to a week earlier on the 14th. On the 14th, the number of tests increased after a decrease during the Chuseok holiday, leading to a rise in confirmed cases. Compared to the previous day, new cases decreased by 6,631, maintaining the downward trend of the outbreak.
New deaths were recorded at 59, an increase of 35 from the previous day. COVID-19 deaths had decreased for five consecutive days since the 15th, when 72 deaths were reported, but rebounded on this day. By age group, there were 32 deaths among those aged 80 and above, 14 in their 70s, 7 in their 60s, 3 in their 50s, and one each in their 40s, 30s, and 20s. The cumulative death toll stands at 27,950, with a fatality rate of 0.11%.
The number of critically ill patients hospitalized was 494, three fewer than the previous day. The critically ill patient count, which was 508 on the 19th, decreased to 497 on the 20th, maintaining the 400s for two consecutive days. The nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate is 26.6%, with 26.7% in the metropolitan area and 26.3% in non-metropolitan areas.
The total number of confirmed cases currently under home treatment is 240,126, a decrease of 31,287 from the previous day (271,413).
