China firmly opposes Biden's 'Taiwan defense' remarks and lodges stern protest
Mao Ning, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Says "Serious Violations of the 'One China' Principle"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Chinese authorities strongly opposed after U.S. President Joe Biden stated that the U.S. would militarily intervene in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was asked about President Biden's remarks during a regular briefing on the 19th. He condemned, saying, "The United States has seriously violated the One-China principle, the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqu?s, and its important commitments not to support Taiwan independence, sending a seriously wrong signal to Taiwan independence separatist forces."
Earlier, on the 18th (local time), President Biden said in an in-depth interview program "60 Minutes" aired on CBS, when asked if the U.S. would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, "Actually, if there is an unprecedented attack, we will do so."
Spokesperson Mao emphasized, "China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition," adding, "We have already lodged a stern representation with the U.S. side."
He further stressed, "There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is a part of China, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government of China," and said, "Achieving the complete reunification of the motherland is the common aspiration and sacred responsibility of all Chinese descendants."
He also stated, "We wish to achieve peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and effort, but at the same time, we will not tolerate any activities that split the country and will take all necessary measures," urging, "No one should underestimate the firm determination of the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and no one should confront the 1.4 billion people."

Spokesperson Mao additionally said, "The U.S. side must recognize the importance and sensitivity of the Taiwan issue and keep its promise not to support Taiwan independence," urging, "Handle the Taiwan issue prudently and properly, send no wrong signals to Taiwan independence separatist forces, and do not damage China-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."
