View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] POSCO has completely halted recovery operations at the Pohang Steelworks and strengthened safety-first preparedness measures in response to the northward approach of Typhoon Nanmadol.
POSCO announced that it stopped recovery work at 3 a.m. on the 19th and that all employees are on high alert, preparing for the typhoon centered around the comprehensive flood and wind disaster control room.
The day before, POSCO urgently reinforced a 56-meter section of the collapsed embankment at the Cold Stream in Pohang Steelworks using large water-blocking bags, completed preventive measures against flooding at the power substation, and placed flood barriers at locations within the plant vulnerable to flooding.
Additionally, to prepare for strong winds, POSCO secured structures and waste materials damaged by Typhoon Hinnamnor, dismantled temporary tents used by firefighters and partner companies, and completed inspections of the fastening status of temporary structures such as portable toilets.
For the safety of employees and partner staff, POSCO strictly prohibits access to entrances and outdoor activities during the peak hours of the typhoon, bans access to flooded areas with high risk of electric shock and areas around generators, and controls personnel and prohibits vehicle parking in frequently flooded areas.
POSCO plans to reconfirm safety through facility inspections after Typhoon Nanmadol passes in the afternoon and resume recovery operations at Pohang Steelworks.
