Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on the 18th that it received the notification of award for the South Philippine Urban Railway Sections 4, 5, and 6 project, commissioned by the Philippine Department of Transportation.
This project involves the construction of a railway approximately 56 km in total length, connecting downtown Manila to southern Calamba. Hyundai Engineering & Construction will be responsible for 3 out of the 9 sections, constructing 9 aboveground stations and about 32 km of elevated bridges. The construction period is 57 months from the start date.
As the lead contractor for the project, Hyundai Engineering & Construction will oversee all construction work except for some foundation work involving Dong-A Geotech. The portion of the project handled by Hyundai amounts to about 1.7 trillion KRW, which is 90% of the total scale.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction successfully re-entered the Philippine construction market after 34 years by winning the northern section of the Philippine North-South Railway through a strategic bid in 2020. A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official stated, "This achievement is the result of recognition for our technical capabilities in the northern section of the Philippine North-South Railway project and our extensive experience in large-scale railway construction projects both domestically and internationally."
Hyundai Engineering & Construction plans to strengthen cooperation for the development of Philippine infrastructure, anticipating that the Philippine government, which was inaugurated this year, will continue large-scale infrastructure development.
A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official said, "This contract win is a valuable achievement accomplished despite the global construction industry's contraction and difficulties in overseas orders due to COVID-19. We plan to continuously enhance our status as a global top-tier company by strengthening competitiveness and promoting future growth engine projects."
