POSCO suffered massive damage from Typhoon No. 11 ‘Hinnamnor’ and, during the joint response discussion on the 15th for damage recovery and early normalization, appealed to the city about difficulties in securing vacuum trucks for removing muddy water and requested quarantine support throughout the steelworks.
Accordingly, Pohang City urgently deployed three vacuum trucks to carry out large-scale muddy water removal work within POSCO, dredging 20,000 liters in just one day, focusing on sites requiring urgent action.
Additionally, the city supported 20 quarantine vehicles, over 50 fogging and spraying devices, and about 100 quarantine volunteer teams from towns, townships, and neighborhoods. After conducting thorough preliminary training on safety rules and overall quarantine matters together with POSCO Health Promotion Center staff, sterilization and disinfection were carried out throughout the Pohang Steelworks.
The city prioritized allocating vacuum trucks for POSCO’s early normalization, which will serve as a turning point for local economic recovery, and plans to continuously provide additional support such as quarantine in mutual consultation with POSCO after monitoring the recovery situation.
Mayor Kang-deok Lee of Pohang said, “Since the steel industry is a key industry with a significant impact on both the local and national economy, we will actively cooperate for POSCO’s rapid restoration,” adding, “I hope this crisis caused by the typhoon damage will be wisely overcome and become an opportunity to coexist with the local community.”
President Sang-hae Lee of the Saemaul Association said, “It is very unfortunate that POSCO, the core of our local economy, suffered such great damage from this typhoon,” and added, “Since the safety of POSCO employees who are doing their best in damage recovery is important, our Saemaul Association will do its utmost to support quarantine efforts in cooperation with POSCO.”
