Engineering Student Assaulting Private Tutoring Student Appeals After 1 Year 4 Months Prison Sentence in First Trial
Appeal Filed at Court on the Afternoon of the 16th
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man in his 20s, a university student sentenced to prison for repeatedly assaulting a minor tutoring student, has appealed the first trial verdict.
According to the Seoul Southern District Court on the 16th, Mr. A, in his 20s, who is charged with violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes (habitual injury), submitted an appeal to the court that day. Judge Cho Sang-min of the Criminal Division 9 at the Seoul Southern District Court sentenced Mr. A on the 14th to 1 year and 4 months in prison, along with 40 hours of participation in a child abuse treatment program and a 3-year employment restriction at child and youth-related institutions.
The court stated, "The assaults were repeated over a period of more than a month, with the number of assaults reaching 160 times," and added, "It was confirmed that he vented his anger directly by hitting the victim." The court explained the sentencing by saying, "The mental shock suffered by the young victim, who was a first-year middle school student at the time, is believed to have been very severe."
Mr. A is accused of indiscriminately assaulting middle school student Mr. B, who was receiving private tutoring from him, at a study cafe in Yeongdeungpo-gu on June 13.
At the time of the incident, Mr. A reportedly punched Mr. B multiple times in the solar plexus and assaulted him dozens of times over about 50 minutes inside the cafe and on the stairs within the building.
The assault came to light the day after the incident when Mr. B’s parents noticed the abuse and reported it. When Mr. B suddenly said, "I want to quit," after returning from tutoring, his parents confirmed the abuse.
It was reported that Mr. B had numerous dark bruises all over his body at the time, and he was diagnosed with injuries requiring two weeks of medical treatment. Additionally, he has been receiving psychiatric treatment due to anxiety symptoms following the assault.
Mr. A reportedly became enraged and assaulted Mr. B after hearing that Mr. B wanted to quit tutoring, as he would no longer receive tuition fees.
During the police investigation, it was found that Mr. A had habitually assaulted Mr. B before. To ensure the victim’s safety, the police imposed a restraining order on Mr. A and provided Mr. B with a smartwatch.
