View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Juri] As Typhoon Muifa, the 12th typhoon, is increasingly likely to head toward China, the path of Typhoon Merbok, the 13th typhoon, is being seen as a variable. Currently, Merbok is only a possibility, but it is predicted to pass directly over the Korean Peninsula.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 11th, Muifa is located about 620 km southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, as of 3 p.m. that day. Its maximum wind speed is 115 km/h, with a speed of 32 m/s.
The KMA expects Muifa to move northward at a speed of 19 km/h and predicts it will reach about 150 km southeast of Shanghai, China, by the 15th.
Jeju is expected to be indirectly affected by Muifa in the middle to late next week. If Muifa changes course eastward, the Korean Peninsula will come under its direct influence.
However, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) predicts that Muifa will not enter the Korean Peninsula.
According to the U.S. Weather Center (GFS), on the 16th, Typhoon Merbok, with a radius of about 800 km, will form approximately 500 km off the coast of Okinawa. Merbok is expected to strengthen as it moves northward and enter the waters near Jeju Island on the 19th. Photo by Yonhap News

According to the U.S. Global Forecast System (GFS), Typhoon Merbok, with a radius of about 800 km, will form about 500 km from Okinawa waters on the 16th.
Merbok is expected to strengthen as it moves northward and enter the waters near Jeju Island on the 19th.
If Merbok forms, it is expected to directly hit the Korean Peninsula, but forecasts beyond that have not yet been released.
The Czech Meteorological Agency’s forecast site, Windy.com, also anticipates Merbok heading toward the Korean Peninsula.
According to Windy.com, Merbok will pass through Okinawa on the 18th, then pass south of Jeju Island on the 19th, move northeast, and reach the west coast region after the 20th.

However, Merbok has not yet formed, and Muifa’s path may also change depending on factors such as the distribution of surrounding high pressure, water vapor, heat, and changes in sea surface temperature.
