The demand for semiconductor industry personnel is expected to increase from 177,000 to approximately 304,000 over the next 10 years (Semiconductor Industry Association, 2022).
Both institutions agreed that the most important task to be prioritized for establishing a stable growth foundation for the local semiconductor industry is the training and supply of skilled personnel, and decided to actively cooperate in talent development.
The university will establish a specialized semiconductor program to produce bachelor-level talents who can be immediately deployed in the field without additional training after employment, and the city will actively support recruitment through industry-academia-research cooperation. They also agreed to mutually cooperate for the designation of the Gumi semiconductor specialized complex and talent cultivation.
President Woo Dong-gi has been serving as the inaugural Chairman of the National Balanced Development Committee under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration since September 1st, playing a role in realizing "a local era where anywhere in Korea is a good place to live."
This MOU was also signed as one of the win-win measures to respond to the concentration of semiconductor policies in the metropolitan area.
Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, "The growth of the semiconductor industry is centered on creating a capability-strengthening ecosystem that supports talent development, activation of cooperation among companies, and R&D. We will continue to build a strong city for the semiconductor industry ecosystem through steady industry-academia-research cooperation."
