View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Typhoon Hinnamnor, the 11th typhoon of the season, has approached within 300km of Jeju.
According to the typhoon information released by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) at 4 p.m. on the 5th, as of 3 p.m. that day, Hinnamnor was passing 240km south-southwest off Seogwipo City, Jeju, moving north-northeast at 28 km/h.
As of 4 p.m., the distances from the center of Hinnamnor to major locations are 270km, Tongyeong 480km, Pohang 630km, and Ulleungdo 850km.
Hinnamnor will pass 90km south of Seogwipo City at 9 p.m. on the 5th and make landfall 190km southwest of Busan at 3 a.m. on the 6th. After entering the land near Busan, it will move back out to about 130km north-northeast off Busan around 9 a.m.
The time when Typhoon Hinnamnor reaches the southern coast of Gyeongnam has been slightly advanced compared to earlier forecasts. In a briefing on the 5th, the KMA predicted that Hinnamnor would make landfall on Jeju Island around 1 a.m. on the 6th and reach the coastal area of Gyeongnam around 7 a.m.
At landfall 190km southwest of Busan at 3 a.m. on the 6th, Hinnamnor's central pressure is expected to be 945 hPa, with maximum wind speeds of 45 m/s, and intensity classified as "very strong." When it moves out to 130km north-northeast off Busan, the central pressure will be 955 hPa, maximum wind speeds 40 m/s, and intensity "strong."
Typhoon Maysak, which followed a similar path in 2020 when it approached Geoje Island, had a central pressure of 957 hPa, so Hinnamnor is arriving in a more developed state. The "very strong" typhoon intensity corresponds to maximum wind speeds of 44 m/s or more but less than 54 m/s, while "strong" corresponds to 33 m/s or more but less than 43 m/s.
As of 4 p.m., typhoon warnings are in effect for Jeju, Jeju offshore waters, southern West Sea, South Sea, Jeonnam, and western Gyeongnam offshore waters. Heavy rain warnings are issued for the Seoul metropolitan area, central and northern Gangwon, and northern Chungnam, while strong wind warnings are in place for the Gyeongnam coast and western Chungnam coast.
Jeju is experiencing rainfall of about 40mm per hour, and nationwide rainfall ranges from 5 to 15mm per hour. From the 4th until 5 p.m. on the 5th, Jeju has received over 500mm of rain, and Seoul has seen over 100mm. Specific amounts include 517mm at Witseoreum in Jeju, 159.5mm at Ha-an in Yanggu, Gangwon, 151mm at Yeongbuk in Pocheon, Gyeonggi, and 131mm in Gangnam, Seoul.
As the typhoon moves northward, strong winds of 40 to 60 m/s are expected in Jeju, the southern coast of Jeonnam, the coastal area of Gyeongnam, and Ulleungdo and Dokdo. Winds of 30 to 40 m/s will affect the eastern coast of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang, and the western coast of Jeonnam. Other southern regions, Chungcheong, and southern Gangwon Yeongseo will experience winds of 20 to 30 m/s. The duration of strong winds will be from the afternoon of the 5th to the morning of the 6th in Jeju, from the night of the 5th to the morning of the 6th in southern regions, and from the night of the 5th to the afternoon of the 6th on the east coast.
Maximum instantaneous wind speeds are gradually increasing as the typhoon approaches. Observed maximum instantaneous wind speeds include 34.5 m/s at Samgakbong in Jeju, 32.1 m/s at Seoraksan (Yangyang), and 25.3 m/s at Mudeungsan (Gwangju).
