Namwon City Successfully Hosts the 59th Jeollabuk-do Residents Sports Festival
[Namwon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Young-kwon] Namwon City, Jeollabuk-do, announced on the 5th that the '59th Jeollabuk-do Residents Sports Festival,' held from the 2nd to the 4th at Namwon Chunhyanggol Sports Park Comprehensive Stadium and various sports venues, concluded successfully.
This year's festival was held normally for the first time in three years due to COVID-19, attracting great interest from many athletes and residents from the start. About 10,000 athletes from 14 cities and counties participated in 37 events, engaging in fierce competition.
As a result, Jeonju City took first place overall, Namwon City came in second, and Iksan City placed third.
The closing ceremony began with a pre-performance by singer Kang Hye-won, a native of Namwon, followed by viewing of major videos from the festival, announcement of the results, overall awards, handing over the tournament flag to Gimje City, the host of the next festival, extinguishing the flame, and the closing sequence.
During the festival, the city also held the Jeolla Arts Festival and Makgeolli Festival simultaneously to unite all residents through culture and sports, widely promoting Namwon's representative attractions and food both domestically and internationally, receiving favorable reviews.
In particular, various local specialties produced in Namwon were exhibited and sold at a special product exhibition corner during the festival period, attracting more than 25,000 visitors including athletes' families, greatly contributing to the revitalization of the local economy.
Mayor Choi Kyung-sik said, "It was a great honor to host a festival in Namwon for the first time in 15 years that could give hope and courage to the residents of Jeollabuk-do who have gone through difficult times due to COVID-19," and added, "I thank the Jeollabuk-do Sports Council, city and county sports councils, sports organizations, public officials, volunteers, and many others who worked together to continue the unity and solidarity of 1.8 million Jeollabuk-do residents during the festival."
He continued, "The city will actively host various sports events following this festival to further solidify its reputation as the sports hub of the Jirisan area."
Meanwhile, the '59th Jeollabuk-do Residents Sports Festival' closed on the 4th as a venue for friendship and harmony, and the 60th festival will be held in Gimje City.
