POSCO Inter Transports Ukrainian Corn via Sea Route
61,000 Tons Shipment, Departure on the 16th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] POSCO International is bringing Ukrainian corn, which had been blocked from export due to the Russia-Ukraine war, into South Korea through Incheon Port.
POSCO International announced on the 5th that a ship carrying 61,000 tons of corn, which was docked at the Pivdennyi port in Ukraine, departed for South Korea on the 16th.
The shipment is scheduled to arrive at Incheon Port in late September, and it is expected that the entire amount will be used for feed, helping to stabilize domestic feed prices.
POSCO International has been closely monitoring the progress of negotiations on safe shipping routes between Russia and Ukraine and has been preparing for the early departure of vessels for import to South Korea through close cooperation with local Ukrainian suppliers and shipowners.
This shipment is regarded as a meaningful case demonstrating that, in emergencies, private companies can import grain secured overseas into the country, contributing to domestic food security and price stabilization.
A POSCO International official stated, “With the global supply chain crisis emphasizing the importance of food security and the government presenting ‘securing food sovereignty’ as a national agenda, we will continuously expand overseas grain imports through this shipment to contribute to domestic food security and price stabilization.”
Currently, it is known that about 20 million tons of grain, including corn and wheat, are stored in Ukraine due to the war, and major global grain companies are attempting various methods to secure quantities and import them into their own countries.
With the resumption of exports, the Ukrainian government expects to export more than 3 million tons of grain per month, which is anticipated to help alleviate global inflation.
