[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] The largest sports complex in the district, the ‘Buk-gu Sports Complex,’ is opening in Buk-gu, Gwangju.
Buk-gu announced on the 30th that the opening ceremony for the ‘Buk-gu Sports Complex’ will be held on the 2nd of next month at 2 p.m., with about 400 attendees including the Mayor of Gwangju, members of the National Assembly, city and district councilors, sports officials, and residents. The complex will begin pilot operations from September 5.
The ‘Buk-gu Sports Complex Construction Project,’ a key pledge of the 7th local government administration reflecting residents’ wishes to expand the living sports infrastructure, started with a feasibility study at the end of 2018. After more than three years of efforts including negotiations for free use of city land and residents’ briefings, it has finally opened.
The ‘Buk-gu Sports Complex’ was built at a total project cost of 16 billion KRW within the Cheomdan 2 Industrial Sports Park (1059 Yeonje-dong), covering a total floor area of 4,995㎡ and consisting of four above-ground floors.
The first floor houses a fitness certification center, sports office, multipurpose meeting room, caf?, sports goods store, and shower rooms. The second floor features a multipurpose gymnasium, while the third and fourth floors include 671 spectator seats and leisure program rooms for residents. The existing outdoor futsal, basketball, and jokgu courts within the sports park are also integrated as part of the indoor and outdoor comprehensive sports facilities.
In particular, with a gymnasium area of 2,066㎡, it is the largest sports complex in Buk-gu and ranks second in size in Gwangju, following the Gwangju Women’s University Universiade Gymnasium.
Additionally, the facility is expected to contribute to community revitalization as a multipurpose complex for residents, allowing for diverse uses beyond sports purposes.
Director Moon said, “Residents who had difficulties accessing sports facilities due to poor accessibility can now enjoy living sports in a nearby and comfortable environment. We will continue to make our best efforts to provide residents with a high-quality living sports experience.”
Meanwhile, Buk-gu has opened the ‘Jungheung Library,’ ‘Shinyong Administrative Complex Town,’ and the nation’s first ‘Bandabi Sports Center’ this year. The ‘Usan Living Sports Complex’ is also scheduled to open next month, marking the fruition of large-scale living SOC projects promoted during the 7th local government administration.
