[2023 Early Admission] Seoul National University of Science and Technology Eases Minimum CSAT Requirements for Student Record-Based Screening
Seoul National University of Science and Technology will select 1,479 students, accounting for 62% of the total 2,378 new students for the 2023 academic year, through early admission. This includes 805 students (33.8%) through the Comprehensive Student Record Screening, 416 students (17.4%) through the High School Recommendation Screening, 190 students (7.9%) through the Essay Screening, and 68 students (2.8%) through the Practical Skills Screening.
The Comprehensive Student Record Screening includes representative tracks such as the Outstanding School Life Screening, the Advanced Talent Screening, and the Equal Opportunity Screening. Among the Equal Opportunity Screening, the Balanced Opportunity track increased its quota from 56 students last year to 85 students for the 2023 academic year. To reduce the burden on applicants, the minimum CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test) requirement for the Student Record Screening was lowered from two subjects with a combined grade of 6 (reflecting two inquiry subjects) to a combined grade of 7 for two subjects (reflecting one inquiry subject). The self-introduction letter has been abolished, so applicants only need to submit their school records as the first-stage document for the Comprehensive Student Record Screening.
For this year's early admission, as in the previous year, there is no minimum CSAT requirement for all tracks except the High School Recommendation Screening. Applicants can apply up to five times across different tracks.
The High School Recommendation Screening selects students who have been diligent in their high school curriculum and school life and requires a principal's recommendation. Student record grades from grades 1 to 3 are reflected equally. The minimum CSAT requirement for natural science departments is Korean, Math (choose one between Calculus or Geometry), English, and one science inquiry subject; for humanities departments, it is Korean, Math, English, and two inquiry subjects with a combined grade within 7.
The Outstanding School Life Screening selects three times the number of candidates in the first stage based on 100% document screening, and the second stage evaluates 70% from the first stage results and 30% from interviews. The first-stage document evaluation uses only the student record as evaluation material, and the interview assesses personality, communication skills, logical thinking, major suitability, and potential for development. Rather than simply selecting students with high grades, the focus is on selecting talents who possess civic awareness and actively participate in school life.
The Advanced Talent Screening is for selecting 60 new students for departments under the College of Creative Convergence, such as the Department of Artificial Intelligence Applications, the Department of Intelligent Semiconductor Engineering, and the Department of Future Energy Convergence. The selection process is the same as the Outstanding School Life Screening.
The Essay Screening selects students based on 30% student record grades and 70% essay scores. The essay test lasts 100 minutes and consists of three questions. The test is held over two days, November 21-22, after the CSAT. There is no minimum CSAT requirement, and since only natural science departments are selected through the essay screening, only mathematics is tested. The scope includes Math 1, Math 2, Calculus, and Probability and Statistics.
