Yeo: "Yoon Administration's Police Behavior to Prove Loyalty Is Unbearable to Watch"
Defense Moves as Authorities Act Immediately After Inauguration... "Clearly Politically Motivated"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 29th, the Democratic Party of Korea criticized the police for transferring the case in which party leader Lee Jae-myung was accused in connection with the so-called 'Baekhyeon-dong suspicion' to the prosecution, saying, “We will definitely hold accountable the police’s political behavior that betrays the fundamental role of investigative agencies.”
Lee Su-jin, the Democratic Party’s floor spokesperson, stated in a written briefing on the same day, "Are the police conducting a proper investigation before transferring the case?" She added, "The police’s behavior to prove loyalty to the Yoon Seok-yeol administration is unbearable to watch," and said, "The political intent behind the investigative pressure tightening immediately on the first day of Lee’s inauguration is chilling."
She continued, "There has been no proper investigation so far. Apart from Lee’s written response to the police’s request, no investigation of related parties was conducted," and said, "Ultimately, the police did not care about what the truth was. It is clear from the beginning that their intention was to prosecute Lee regardless of the truth."
She also expressed doubt, saying, "It is questionable whether the response to the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee can be subject to the election law," and claimed, "There is a strong political intention to use the election law to make Lee unable to move."
According to the prosecution and police on the same day, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency transferred the case on the 26th to the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office. The case involves accusations that Lee, who appeared at the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee’s Gyeonggi Province audit on October 20 last year as governor of Gyeonggi Province after being selected as the presidential candidate, violated the Public Official Election Act by publicly announcing false information related to the special favor of changing the use of the Baekhyeon-dong Korea Food Research Institute site.

Earlier, Park Chan-dae, a Supreme Council member, also claimed at the Supreme Council meeting on the same day that the police and prosecution are conducting a 'lenient investigation' into First Lady Kim Geon-hee, wife of President Yoon, while "a sweeping investigation is underway against Moon Jae-in government officials and opposition party figures."
