Co-hosted with the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy and the Japan East Asian Economic and Business Management Association, this international conference featured scholars from both Korea and Japan presenting over 30 papers under the theme "Seeking Ways to Strengthen Korea-Japan Trade and Commerce Cooperation in the Era of Global Transformation."
In the keynote speech, Professor Emeritus Lee Jong-yoon of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies emphasized, "It is necessary to face the reality that the international trade environment surrounding Korea and Japan demands stronger cooperation than ever before," adding, "The two countries share similarities in industrial structure, close economic development processes, geographical proximity, and the concept of a free market, so despite rapid changes in the international trade environment, swift cooperation can enable significant sharing of economic benefits and provide many opportunities to overcome economic recessions."
In the main session, focused discussions were held on topics such as △ Directions for Korea-Japan cooperation in terms of economic security (Dr. Kim Gyu-pan, Korea Institute for International Economic Policy) △ The spread of mega FTAs (Free Trade Agreements) in East Asia and Korea-Japan cooperative relations (Professor Kim Bong-gil, Toyama University, Japan) △ Directions for Korea-Japan cooperation in the semiconductor industry (Professor Han Ki-jo, Dong-Eui University). These discussions raised the need for problem-solving measures to strengthen trade and commerce cooperation between Korea and Japan and the necessity of policy efforts by both governments.
At this conference, it was discussed that to strengthen Korea-Japan trade and commerce cooperation in the future, the top priority is the freezing of cash conversion of Japanese companies' assets following the South Korean Supreme Court's forced labor compensation ruling, which is entering its final stages. Based on this, there is great potential for expanding trade and commerce cooperation and joint development in various fields between the two countries.
President Lee Hong-bae of the Korea-Japan Business Administration Association explained, "This conference focused on examining the current status of Korea-Japan cooperative relations, which have been in a prolonged deadlock, and seeking trade and commerce cooperation measures between Korea and Japan that correspond to the new era, new environment, and changes."
