McDonald's Raises Prices on 68 Items by 100 to 400 Won Starting Today
Burger Prices Keep Rising... All Increased Within Six Months
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] McDonald's raised the prices of 68 menu items by an average of 4.8% starting from the 25th.
According to McDonald's on that day, the prices of 68 menu items, including desserts and beverages, were increased by 100 to 400 KRW from that day onward. With this price hike, the single item price of the 'Big Mac' was adjusted upward from 4,600 KRW to 4,900 KRW.
This price increase by McDonald's is the first in about half a year since February.
A McDonald's representative said, "Due to unavoidable price adjustments caused by rising costs of raw materials, logistics, and other domestic and international expenses."
As the new term 'Lunchflation' (a combination of lunch + inflation) has recently emerged to describe the rapid rise in dining-out prices, burger franchises that raised prices at the end of last year or early this year are again increasing prices one after another in the second half of the year.
No Brand Burger by Shinsegae Food raised the prices of about 40 menu items by an average of 5.5% on the 18th. This is eight months after raising burger product prices by an average of 2.8% in December last year.
Mom's Touch raised prices of 50 menu items on the 4th, about half a year after its price increase in February this year, and Burger King also raised prices of 46 products by an average of 4.5%. This is half a year after raising prices of 33 products by an average of 2.9% in January. The price of the representative menu, the Whopper, rose from 6,100 KRW in December last year to 6,400 KRW in January, and jumped to 6,900 KRW from the 29th of last month.
KFC also raised prices of some menu items by 200 to 400 KRW last month following a price increase in January. The price of KFC Original Chicken rose 16% from 2,500 KRW in December last year to 2,900 KRW currently.

As dining-out prices soar, consumers' burdens are also increasing. According to Statistics Korea, dining-out prices last month rose 8.4% compared to the same period last year. The increase rate of dining-out prices recorded the highest level in about 30 years since October 1992 (8.8%).
