The business community expects Vice Chairman Lee to expand such initiatives following this lottery win, accelerating his global management activities. It is anticipated that he will focus on securing future growth engines for Samsung Electronics.
On the 25th, Samsung Electronics announced that it had completed the development of key technologies for the Reinvented Toilet (RT) project and successfully conducted user testing after three years of research and development in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. On the same day, Samsung Electronics held a project completion ceremony with the Gates Foundation at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology.
The RT project is a new concept sanitation toilet distribution initiative that the Gates Foundation has been promoting since 2011 for underdeveloped countries. Its goal is to develop and commercialize a new type of toilet that can be used without water or sewage treatment facilities. The project aims to expand the distribution of hygienic toilets to reduce diseases and improve the quality of life in developing countries. The Gates Foundation attempted to implement RT with leading global research institutions and universities but faced difficulties with technical challenges and cost levels, leading them to request collaboration with Samsung Electronics in 2018.
Vice Chairman Lee, upon receiving the RT project report at the time, actively pushed forward by ordering the formation of a task force at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology for technology development. Through various communication channels such as emails, phone calls, and video conferences with Chairman Bill Gates, he closely monitored the progress, resulting in achievements after three years.
On the 16th, Vice Chairman Lee met with Chairman Bill Gates, who visited Korea, to share the development results of the RT project and exchange opinions on global social contribution activities. During the meeting, Chairman Gates explained the vision of the Gates Foundation and the current status of its social contribution activities. Vice Chairman Lee expressed his intention to contribute to solving humanity’s challenges through Samsung’s technology.
The business community expects Vice Chairman Lee to focus on rebuilding his global network starting with the meeting with Chairman Bill Gates. Although he had been recognized as a key diplomatic asset, his management activities were hindered due to employment restrictions, but now that he has been reinstated, it is expected that he will be able to fully utilize his global network.
In fact, Vice Chairman Lee has previously met with executives such as Japanese telecommunications management in 2019 and Timotheus H?ttges, CEO of Deutsche Telekom in Germany. In November 2021, he visited the United States and met with major industry executives including Noubar Afeyan, co-founder and chairman of Moderna, Hans Vestberg, CEO of Verizon, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google. In May of this year, he also had a meeting with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger.
The business community evaluates that Vice Chairman Lee will expand his global management footprint and seek new business opportunities with executives of major global IT companies. It is expected that he will work on securing future growth engines for Samsung.
