[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwanak-gu District Office (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is recruiting participants for the second semester of the ‘Gwanak-gu-Seoul National University SAM Mentoring’ program, a school-government collaboration project with Seoul National University, until September 1.

SAM (SNU Active Mentoring) Mentoring is a program where Seoul National University students serve as mentors for local students from 3rd grade elementary to 2nd grade high school, providing customized academic guidance, career counseling, and cultural experience activities.

The district utilizes Seoul National University’s excellent educational resources to enhance educational competitiveness and continuously conducts the program to improve youth learning abilities and emotional development through academic guidance and career and personal counseling.

Seventy Seoul National University students will directly visit schools or local children’s centers to mentor 260 elementary, middle, and high school students, providing 20 sessions of two hours each.

The mentoring not only boosts students’ motivation and academic achievement but also prioritizes recommendations for underprivileged students such as basic livelihood security recipients, near-poverty groups, multicultural families, and students with disabilities, contributing to equal educational opportunities and alleviating educational polarization.

In the first semester of this year, a total of 717 people participated, including 529 mentees and 188 mentors. Notably, since last summer vacation, the program shifted to face-to-face operation, reducing the number of mentees per mentor from 4 to 2-3 to improve student concentration.

Institutions wishing to participate in mentoring can register on the SAM Mentoring website by September 1, and the mentor-mentee matching results can be checked on the website after 6 p.m. on the 14th.

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “I hope young people will have a valuable time gaining learning motivation and receiving career and personal counseling through mentoring with Seoul National University students,” adding, “We will continue to accelerate the provision of competitive, customized educational content by utilizing Seoul National University’s excellent educational resources.”
