Stopel Bandorn Crowned 2021-2022 Season Champion
Next Year's Tournament Considered for May at Gwanghwamun Square, Seoul
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The first-ever domestic hosting of the world's premier electric vehicle racing competition, the 'ABB FIA Formula E Championship' (Formula E), has concluded. Until now, this competition had only been held in electric vehicle powerhouses such as China, the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. This reflects the rising status of the domestic electric vehicle industry, drawing increased attention both domestically and internationally.
According to the automotive industry on the 15th, Belgian driver Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes-Benz) was crowned the 2021-2022 season champion of Formula E, the world's top electric car racing competition, which concluded in Seoul the previous day.
Vandoorne crossed the finish line in 2nd place at the final 16th round Seoul E-Prix of the 2021-2022 Formula E World Championship held at the Jamsil Circuit in Seoul. Although he finished 2nd, by adding 18 points, Vandoorne secured a total of 213 points to become the season champion.
Following him, Mitch Evans (180 points, Jaguar, New Zealand) finished as the season runner-up, and Edoardo Mortara (169 points, Rokit Venturi, Switzerland) took 3rd place.
Vandoorne, who could have won by finishing within the top 7, managed the race steadily without taking unnecessary risks. Evans, who had won the 15th round held the day before and jumped to 2nd place aiming for a comeback victory, had to settle for the final runner-up position.
Vandoorne's team, Mercedes, also celebrated a double victory by becoming the season champion team. Mercedes secured the team and driver championship double crown for two consecutive seasons.
Meanwhile, the winner of the 16th round was Mortara. Mortara became the 100th winner in the history of Formula E races.
The Seoul E-Prix, held over two days, was the first Formula E event in Korea and the first international car race held in downtown Seoul. The inaugural event was originally scheduled for 2020 but was delayed by two years due to COVID-19. This year, just before the event, heavy rainstorms hit Seoul, causing difficulties in preparations and many twists and turns.
The International Automobile Federation (FIA), Seoul City, and Formula E Korea are reportedly considering holding next year's event in May at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul.
