[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] K Shipbuilding (formerly STX Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) announced on the 12th that it has transferred the LNG (liquefied natural gas) fuel gas supply system (LNG FGSS) technology to marine equipment company KOSERI.

The technology transfer contract was signed on May 31. K Shipbuilding transferred the LNG FGSS facilities, equipment operation, and maintenance methods to KOSERI.

This technology was developed by K Shipbuilding through a national project by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and has been used at the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI) Gyeongnam Headquarters for performance testing of domestically produced equipment. However, recently, KOMERI opened a Gas Fuel Technology Center in the Mieum Industrial Complex in Busan, leaving the equipment idle.

KOSERI is advancing domestic localization by completing FGSS engineering technology applying domestic parts using the transferred equipment and technology.

A K Shipbuilding official stated, "This technology transfer has created a model for win-win development between medium-sized and small enterprises," adding, "It has established an environment for domestic localization of FGSS equipment using domestic parts, moving beyond the stage of researching and developing domestic equipment for LNG fuel supply systems in Korea. This increases the possibility of replacing key components, which were mainly procured overseas, with domestic products."

Meanwhile, KOSERI was selected as an LNG FGSS consortium company in the recruitment announcement for demonstration equipment for the multi-purpose maritime demonstration platform construction project led by KOMERI, and plans to supply FGSS with domestic parts applied through the transferred technology.
