20 Descendants of Independence Patriots Acquire South Korean Citizenship on Gwangbokjeol
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Twenty descendants of independence activists with foreign nationalities obtained South Korean citizenship on the occasion of the 77th Liberation Day.
On the morning of the 11th, the Ministry of Justice held the "77th Liberation Day Commemoration Independence Activists' Descendants Citizenship Certificate Award Ceremony" at the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea Memorial Hall in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, awarding citizenship certificates to 20 descendants of independence activists, including Gye Eduard (47), great-grandson of Gye Bong-woo, and Kim Natalia (24), great-granddaughter of Jo Myeong-hui.
Nine individuals with Kazakhstani nationality, nine with Chinese nationality, and one each with Uzbek and Russian nationality obtained South Korean citizenship that day.
At the ceremony, Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon said, "I sincerely congratulate the descendants of independence activists for gaining the qualification to live proudly as members of Korean society according to the Constitution and laws," adding, "I hope they will take root in this land for generations and live as proud Koreans."
Kim Yuri (33), great-great-granddaughter of Kang Yeon-sang, expressed, "Thank you for not forgetting and remembering my grandfather's independence activities," and stated, "As a descendant of an independence activist, I will become a proud Korean."

The event was attended by Jang Ho-gwon, president of the Liberation Association, and In Yo-han, professor at Yonsei University and the first special naturalized citizen of the Republic of Korea, who said, "Let us dream of happiness and live together on this land."
