Korean Intellectual Property Office, Korean Language Excellent Trademark Selection Contest
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced on the 11th that it will hold the "7th Excellent Korean Language Trademark Selection Contest" from the 11th to the 30th.
The contest has been held since 2016 to encourage the application and use of Korean language trademarks. Entries can be submitted by recommending one's own registered trademark or another person's registered trademark through the KIPO website.
The eligible entries and recommendations must be Korean language trademarks that are validly registered as of this month.
However, trademarks that imitate others' trademarks, trademarks held by suspected malicious trademark preemptors, trademarks involved in disputes such as trials or lawsuits, trademarks currently not in use, and trademarks that have already won awards in similar contests are excluded from eligibility.
KIPO conducts a disqualification review on the submitted trademarks, after which Korean language experts recommended by the National Institute of the Korean Language rank the trademarks based on evaluation criteria such as linguistic regularity and uniqueness. These rankings are combined with online voting results from patent customers and examiners to select the excellent trademarks.
A total of 7 excellent trademarks will be selected and awarded. The Beautiful Trademark will receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award (1 case), the Elegant Trademark will receive the Commissioner of KIPO Award (1 case), and the Friendly Trademark will receive the Director of the National Institute of the Korean Language Award (5 cases).

Mok Seong-ho, Director of the Trademark Design Examination Bureau at KIPO, said, "Korean language trademarks that are easy to pronounce and remember while well reflecting the characteristics of the product have a high chance of becoming excellent trademarks," adding, "KIPO hopes that this contest will increase public interest in Korean language trademarks."
