[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Junhyung] The government has established a legal basis to create a control tower to support its nuclear power export strategy. The government plans to launch the control tower soon.
On the 11th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it had completed the enactment of the "Regulations on the Establishment and Operation of the Nuclear Power Export Strategy Promotion Committee and Promotion Team," a Prime Minister's directive. The regulation takes effect from today.
The Nuclear Power Export Strategy Promotion Committee is an intergovernmental control tower to support nuclear power exports. Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee Chang-yang serves as the chairman, and vice ministers from nine related ministries, including the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Science and ICT, participate as ex officio members. Officials from nuclear-related public institutions such as Korea Electric Power Corporation and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, as well as financial public enterprises and private experts, are appointed as commissioned members to contribute their expertise.
Initially, the government planned to establish the "Nuclear Power Export Strategy Promotion Team" as the control tower for nuclear power exports. However, during the preparation process by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the lead ministry, and related agencies, the organization was elevated to the committee level. This reflects the government's strong commitment to supporting nuclear power exports.
The Promotion Committee plans to develop a comprehensive nuclear power export strategy and discover cooperation package projects tailored to the conditions and characteristics of each demand country. It will also deliberate and coordinate matters related to overall nuclear power exports, including institutional improvements and international cooperation. The Promotion Team will be separately formed to handle the committee's practical work, establish detailed implementation plans, and monitor performance.
