Boseong-gun, Subtropical Fruit Full-Scale Shipment Begins
Boseongsan Apple Mango, Excellent Banana Aroma and Sweetness
[Boseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Cheon-seok] The subtropical fruit apple mango cultivated in Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, has begun full-scale shipment.
Boseong apple mangoes are harvested after fully ripening on the tree and checking their sugar content, making their aroma and sweetness far superior to imported ones.
Bananas are also harvested after checking sugar content and go through a ripening process before shipment.
Boseong-gun has been fostering subtropical fruits as a new income crop over the past five years in response to climate change. Starting with a pilot project to establish an apple mango cultivation complex in Joseong-myeon in 2017, four farms have been cultivating apple mangoes (1.0 hectares) to date. Bananas have been cultivated on a 0.3-hectare scale since 2021.
This year, the apple mango production is expected to reach about 3.5 tons. For bananas, since they are harvested after about 120 days of growth following flowering and fruiting, full-scale harvesting is expected to begin around October, and based on the current fruit set, production is expected to exceed 40 tons.
An official from the Boseong Agricultural Technology Center said, “To establish Boseong-gun as a hub for subtropical fruit production, we will continue to expand the cultivation area of various subtropical crops including apple mango, banana, pineapple, and passion fruit, and consistently strive to provide technical guidance for producing high-quality subtropical fruits and contribute to increasing farmers’ income.”
Apple mangoes are good fruits for pregnant women as they have cancer-suppressing effects due to antioxidant action and are rich in vitamin E and polyphenols. Bananas mainly treat gastrointestinal and skin diseases and are rich in potassium, which helps expel sodium.
