Speaker Kim made this announcement in a joint press release after holding a bilateral meeting with Speaker Pelosi, who visited the National Assembly on the 4th. Kim said of Pelosi’s visit, “This is the first official visit by a sitting U.S. House Speaker in 20 years,” adding, “Following the inauguration of our new government, the consecutive visits by the U.S. President and then the House Speaker will serve as a symbolic and important milestone in the Korea-U.S. relationship.”
During the talks, both speakers noted that the Korea-U.S. alliance is expanding into military security, economic, and technological cooperation and discussed ways to enhance collaboration. Kim stated, “As a result of the discussions, both sides recalled that next year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. alliance and agreed to actively consider adopting a commemorative resolution reflecting the expectations of the peoples of both countries for the alliance’s development.”
Regarding practical cooperation, Kim said, “On our side, we highly appreciate the U.S. Congress passing the ‘Infrastructure Law’ at the end of last year and the ‘CHIPS and Science Act’ last month, and we requested congressional cooperation to ensure these translate into tangible benefits for Korean companies operating in the U.S.”
He added, “We also discussed legislative measures to establish professional visa quotas to support advanced technology and supply chain cooperation at the human level, as well as bills granting citizenship to Korean adoptees.”
