Yeosu City Hall Yacht Team Achieves 'Overall 1st Place' at 2022 South Coast Cup International Yacht Competition
7 Countries, 25 Boats, Over 300 Participants... Yeosu City Hall Yacht Team Wins ORC II Division
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] The yacht team of Jeonnam Yeosu City Hall (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) achieved the great feat of winning first place overall at the ‘2022 Namhaean Cup International Yacht Competition’.
This year marked the 3rd edition of the event, held over five days from July 28 to August 1, with 25 vessels and over 300 athletes and officials participating from seven countries including Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
On the first day of the competition, participating teams registered and underwent measurement at Yeosu Ungcheon Marina, and on the second day, a preliminary race called the ‘Inshore Race’ and an awards ceremony were held at Yeosu Gamak Bay.
From the third day, the ‘Offshore Race’ was scheduled to proceed from Yeosu Ungcheon Marina to Tongyeong Donam Port and then to Busan Suyeongman Yacht Stadium; however, due to the impact of Typhoon Songda, only the first leg of the race to Tongyeong Donam Port was conducted.
The Yeosu City Hall yacht team competed with a 34.7-foot cruiser yacht and passed both the ‘Inshore Race’ and the ‘Offshore Race first leg’ in first place with well-organized teamwork.
They made up for the disappointment of last year’s runner-up position in the ORC I division by winning first place in the ORC II division, demonstrating their strength as a leading team in the yacht category.
Started in 2020, this competition is hosted by Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Busan Metropolitan City to promote mutual development in the Namhaean region and to establish a marine leisure tourism belt, and is organized by the Namhaean Cup International Yacht Competition Organizing Committee.
A city official said, “First, I would like to congratulate the athletes, and I am very pleased that they achieved good results again this year following last year. We will continue to provide substantial support so that the athletes can focus on training in better environments.”
