Recently, Guryongpo Port has seen a steady increase in tourists due to drama filming, local festivals, and various foods such as gwamegi, snow crab, and squid. However, a lack of accommodation, parks, and waterfront facilities like walking trails for tourists has become an issue.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is actively promoting the project by including the 'Pohang Guryongpo Port Redevelopment Project,' which redevelops the dredged soil disposal site at Guryongpo Port completed in 2006 into a tourism complex, in the '3rd Port Redevelopment Plan' and conducting a project plan contest in collaboration with Pohang City several times.
The project site covers a total area of 39,216㎡ around the dredged soil disposal site in Byeongpo-ri, Guryongpo-eup, Guryongpo Port. Companies wishing to participate in the project must submit a project plan including accommodation facilities with more than 200 rooms (3-star or higher tourist hotel) by visiting the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries by December 28.
To incorporate creative ideas from the private sector into the project, facilities other than accommodation can be freely proposed by the project plan submitters within the scope of compliance with related regulations such as the urban management plan established by Pohang City.
Mayor Kangdeok Lee of Pohang said, “With the advent of the SNS era, Guryongpo has gained great popularity for its excellent coastal scenery, including the filming location of the drama ‘When the Camellia Blooms.’ It not only boasts marine views but also abundant resources. If a stay-type tourism complex is established, it is expected to transform into a complex cultural tourism hub rather than a one-dimensional tourist spot.”

He added, “We will continue to expand tourism infrastructure by providing family-oriented stay-type accommodations such as hotels and resorts and convenience facilities, and by developing and linking tourism infrastructure, we will achieve the revitalization of the local economy and the completion of Pohang as a sustainable city of hope.”
