Seoul City to Install 177 Electric Vehicle Chargers This Year on Main Roads, LPG Stations, and Taxi Depots
30 Streetlight-Type Fast EV Chargers Installed Along Main Roads by Year-End
50 Fast Chargers Installed at Accessible LPG Stations
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 2nd that it will install 177 ultra-fast chargers by the end of the year, focusing on daily life hubs such as main roads, taxi garages, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stations, so that citizens can conveniently and easily charge electric vehicles in their daily lives.
To improve the accessibility of electric vehicle charging, Seoul plans to expand the installation of streetlight-type fast chargers by 30 units along main roads with heavy vehicle traffic by the end of the year. In July, chargers were also installed on Sejong-daero, located in the heart of the city, as part of efforts to create a convenient charging environment.
Additionally, to promote the transition of taxis and freight vehicles?which have long driving distances and high greenhouse gas emissions?to electric vehicles, approval has been granted for the installation of 97 fast electric vehicle chargers (based on 100kW capacity) at taxi garages and LPG stations. In August, nine 100kW chargers will be installed at five locations, and 44 200kW chargers will be installed at 26 locations.
The usage of two fast electric vehicle chargers installed in March at the Pochang Transport taxi garage in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, has steadily increased, with utilization rising nearly threefold from 84 uses (2,644 kWh) in April to 229 uses (7,737 kWh) in June.
Seoul plans to install an additional 50 chargers in the second half of the year at key locations such as LPG stations and taxi garages. In particular, installation will be concentrated at LPG stations, which have good accessibility and can be conveniently used by electric freight vehicles and private vehicles.
With the installation of a total of 177 hub-type chargers by the end of the year, Seoul expects that not only commercial vehicles such as taxis and freight trucks but also general electric vehicle users will be able to use them conveniently, greatly reducing the inconvenience of searching for chargers.
Yoo Yeon-sik, Head of the Seoul Climate and Environment Headquarters, said, “There is high demand among electric vehicle users for ultra-fast chargers that can be easily found and quickly used in daily surroundings,” adding, “We will strive to expand chargers not only along main roads and at LPG stations but also at gas stations, so that citizens can experience the benefits of electric vehicle chargers.”
