Typhoon No. 6 'Trase' Forms in Japan... Heading Toward Jeju
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] The Korea Meteorological Administration announced on the 31st that the 6th typhoon of the season, 'Trases' (TRASES), has formed about 20 km northwest off the coast of Okinawa, Japan.
Trases is a name submitted by Cambodia and means woodpecker.
Trases is expected to reach 400 km southwest-southwest off Kagoshima, Japan at midnight on the 1st of next month, and then weaken to a tropical depression around 140 km south-southwest off Seogwipo, Jeju at noon on the same day.
The current maximum wind speed of Trases is 18 m/s, just above the typhoon threshold (17 m/s or higher).
The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, "Although Trases is currently considered a tropical depression that does not meet the typhoon level, the Japan Meteorological Agency, which holds the naming rights for typhoons in the Northwest Pacific, has declared it a typhoon."

Meanwhile, the 5th typhoon, Songda (SONGDA), passed 370 km southeast of Qingdao, China at 9 a.m. on the same day and is expected to weaken to a tropical depression within 12 hours.
