Gangwon-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services Urges Thorough Orchard Management After Monsoon Heatwave
Concerns Over Sunburn Damage (Ilsso·Yeopso)
Orchard Temperature Must Be Lowered with Fine Sprinkler Devices
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The Gangwon Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services has urged farmers to thoroughly manage their orchards due to concerns over fruit tree damage and the spread of pests and diseases caused by continuous heatwaves following the monsoon season.
On the 28th, the Agricultural Research and Extension Services expressed concerns about damage to farms as hot and humid weather continues in the Yeongseo region of Gangwon Province, characterized by high temperatures and frequent showers.
According to the Agricultural Research and Extension Services, fruit trees exposed to temperatures above 32℃ can suffer from sunburn damage (sunscald and leaf scorch), so early coloring work should be avoided, and orchard temperatures should be lowered using fine mist sprinklers and other devices.
In hot and humid environments, the occurrence of diseases and pests such as brown spot disease, anthracnose, and spider mites increases rapidly, which can degrade fruit quality; therefore, intensive control measures should be taken as soon as initial symptoms appear.
However, when applying pesticides, using the same active ingredient repeatedly can lead to resistance, so switching to different active ingredients during spraying can help reduce damage.
In particular, this year, Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) is earlier than usual, and it is expected that farmers will perform leaf plucking and color film mulching earlier to advance the harvest, raising concerns about increased heat damage.
