View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] The number of new COVID-19 cases decreased by about 10,000 compared to the previous day but was higher than a week ago. The number of critically ill patients hospitalized approached 200.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 28th, as of midnight, 88,384 new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the total cumulative cases to 19,535,242. Among these, 425 cases were imported from overseas, the second highest ever recorded.
Although the daily increase in cases has slowed, the weekly upward trend continues. The number of cases on this day decreased by 11,901 compared to the previous day (102,085 cases), when daily cases exceeded 100,000.
Compared to a week ago on the 21st (71,145 cases), the number of cases increased by 1.24 times. The 'doubling' phenomenon, where cases double compared to the previous week, appears to have stabilized.
The number of critically ill patients hospitalized increased by 19 from the previous day (177) to 196. This is the same number of critically ill patients as on May 28, marking the first time in two months that this number has been reached. Over 80% of critically ill patients are elderly aged 60 and above (157 patients). The nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate is 23.0%, with 22.2% in the metropolitan area and 25.3% in non-metropolitan areas.
The number of new deaths remained the same as the previous day at 25. By age group, those aged 80 and above accounted for the most deaths at 12, followed by 9 in their 70s, and 2 each in their 50s and 60s. The total cumulative deaths stand at 24,957, with a fatality rate of 0.13%.

With 97,969 new patients added to home treatment the previous day, the total number of home-treated patients as of midnight was 429,979. Among them, 17,710 are in the intensive management group receiving health care from medical institutions.
