[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that it will open a direct text message-only mobile phone for residents to directly report grievances and suggestions to the district mayor, operating from August 1 (with a pilot operation for three days starting July 27).
Mayor Lee, who values ‘direct communication, field-oriented approach, and innovative administration,’ has actively engaged in communication for a long time by publicly sharing his personal phone number and carefully listening to local public opinion even before taking office.
The newly established direct text message-only mobile phone for the district mayor was planned to coincide with the launch of the 8th local government term, enabling Mayor Lee to communicate with residents without barriers as a local troubleshooter and meticulously collect opinions for the community.
Any resident with opinions, grievances, or suggestions for the development of the district can send a text message, and they will receive a response and progress update on the matter within the processing period (1 to 3 days).
The district expects to promptly resolve residents’ inconveniences through the simplified complaint channel of text messaging and actively reflect sincere opinions on local development in district administration.
Yangcheon-gu Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, “We operate a text-only phone line for direct communication with the district mayor to quickly understand residents’ needs and promptly solve problems,” adding, “In the future, I will continue to regard the entire Yangcheon-gu as my office and be a mayor who finds answers on-site without being bound by formalities.”
Nowon-gu (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) Sonamu Center was selected as the ‘Top Community Policing Partner (Public Institution Category)’ by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency for the first half of 2022.
The ‘Top Community Policing Partner’ is a system established by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency since 2017 to select and award organizations and institutions that strive to protect socially vulnerable groups every half-year, fostering cooperative relationships and contributing to building a social safety net.
Opened in October 2018, the Nowon-gu Integrated Support Center for Families in Crisis was renamed ‘Sonamu Center’ in October 2021 to improve accessibility for families at risk of domestic violence. Composed of one integrated case manager, six abuse prevention police officers, and three counselors, the Nowon-gu Sonamu Center provides one-stop services including initial counseling, welfare service linkage, case management, and follow-up monitoring for families in crisis reported to 112 and referred to the center. Last year, the center identified and supported a total of 1,043 families in crisis that were in blind spots.
In particular, last July, the center selected a vulnerable family where the father, previously the perpetrator, became a victim of domestic violence as a case management target and provided protection and support. Continuous monitoring of the father revealed he was suffering from Alzheimer’s dementia, enabling him to receive a long-term care grade for the elderly. The children also had serious health issues such as diabetic complications, for which hospital admission and emergency medical expenses were supported. Additionally, in collaboration with the Single-Parent Family Support Center, the residence was thoroughly cleaned, and housekeeping support services were linked three times a month for two months, providing integrated support aimed at family recovery.
Moreover, the center continuously seeks community collaboration systems. To establish a more diversified system for family restoration, it currently cooperates with seven social welfare service linkage institutions, four domestic violence counseling centers, a housing welfare center, and legal home doctor services to establish a follow-up management system. Accordingly, on the 12th, it received a letter of appreciation from the Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous Police Committee for its contribution to citizens’ comfort and safety.
The Sonamu Center also focuses on strengthening staff capabilities. At the end of last year, it conducted joint training with Lohas Dongseoul Nursing Hospital on the topic of ‘The Relationship Between Domestic Violence and Mental Illness and Response Measures According to Disease Names.’ In February, the Sonamu Center’s community learning community field-led learning course, ‘Sonamu Forum,’ was selected through a public project by the Korea Human Resources Development Institute for Health and Welfare, and the forum was regularized starting in April. This year, a total of five training sessions are planned on the characteristics and response measures for various situations such as domestic violence.

District Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We appreciate the recognition of our Sonamu Center’s achievements in proactive measures, integrated support, and various activities to prevent recurrence for families at risk of domestic violence,” adding, “We will continue to collaborate with Nowon Police Station and do our best to be a reliable shield that families struggling with domestic violence can trust and rely on.”
