Kim Gyo-heung: "Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min Considering All Options Including Impeachment and Dismissal Proposal"
Opposition's All-Out Struggle to Block Police Bureau... Also Considering 'Minister Impeachment'
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 27th, Kim Gyo-heung, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, emphasized that all means, including impeachment and dismissal recommendations against Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, as well as disputes over authority, will be mobilized to prevent the establishment of a Police Bureau within the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Kim, the opposition party secretary of the Administrative Safety Committee, which oversees the National Police Agency, appeared on MBC Radio’s “Kim Jong-bae’s Focus” on the same day and stated, “If Minister Lee continues to forcibly violate the law and push forward with the establishment of the Police Bureau, we can fully consider impeachment and dismissal recommendations.”
Kim also emphasized that the establishment of the Police Bureau violates the Government Organization Act. He said, “Article 34 of the Government Organization Act lists 20 duties of the Minister of the Interior and Safety, but public security is excluded. After the 1987 Park Jong-cheol torture incident, the police were separated as an external agency in 1991 to maintain independence and neutrality because the police had acted as regime henchmen. Reversing this after 31 years is not in line with the spirit of the times.”
He continued, “There was a request for the National Assembly to conduct a dispute over authority judgment, and we are reviewing everything comprehensively. Instead of establishing a Police Bureau, the National Police Commission should be strengthened,” he said.

Kim criticized, “It is a really wrong perception to dismiss the Police Chiefs’ meeting as opposition from a specific faction or a minority. It seems like the police are being perceived as a group that should be controlled by prosecutors.”
