Sunchon National University Successfully Concludes Liberal Arts Course Proposal Contest for Students
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon National University (President Ko Young-jin) Education Innovation Headquarters Liberal Education Center announced on the 25th that it held the ‘Liberal Arts Course Proposal Contest Award Ceremony’ for this year, conducted as part of the University Innovation Support Project.
This contest was designed for students themselves to propose ideas for liberal arts courses to develop courses that can realize student empathy and regional coexistence university innovation, serving as an opportunity to take a step closer to implementing customized education reflecting learners’ demands.
The contest evaluation was based on assessments by six judges and online voting by students, selecting one grand prize course (team), two excellence awards (individual), and four encouragement awards (one team, three individuals).
At the award ceremony, prepared to encourage students to enhance their future competencies and boost their pride, the grand prize team consisted of Bae Seong-hee, Lee Ji-hyun, and Chu Soo-hee (Department of Social Education team); excellence awards went to Son Ryun-byeol (Department of Pharmacy) and Kim Ji-hyun (Department of Accounting); encouragement awards were given to Kim Cheol-hwan (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Lee Eun-young (Department of Visual Design), Choi So-jin (Department of Animal Resource Science), and the team of Choi Ui-yeon and Choi Ja-yeon (Department of Food Engineering), who received certificates along with a scholarship.
The grand prize-winning course, ‘Suncheon Han Bakkwi,’ is a course about ‘understanding, attitude, and habituation of health management through walking activities that highlight the regional characteristics of Suncheon.’
This course does not merely emphasize the importance of health through walking but also stresses a multifaceted purpose of fostering active community participation and character development through plogging (a compound of the Swedish word plocka upp meaning ‘to pick up’ and jogga meaning ‘to jog’), which originated in Sweden to protect the environment and health.
President Ko Young-jin of Suncheon National University stated, “For the new goal of the University Innovation Support Project, ‘Student Empathy and Regional Coexistence University Innovation for Future Talent Development,’ we will put more effort into developing new liberal arts courses and will continue to actively reflect students’ opinions and maintain ongoing interest and effort.”

Meanwhile, the winning works of this contest are scheduled to be offered as new liberal arts courses next year after discussions by the Liberal Education Curriculum Committee. The Education Innovation Headquarters Liberal Education Center, which organized the contest, plans to continuously promote various projects to develop liberal education curricula that resonate with students and coexist with the region, as well as to improve the quality of liberal education.
